About Ali

I Am that I Am, Love.

is that smoke I smell?

This is what I ate for dinner last night.

flautas

How did I do this you ask?  Oh, I am not even sure.  One minute I am in the kitchen heating up dinner and the next minute Emmet is needing my attention and I got sidetracked playing with him.  Next thing you know I smell smoke and think “Oh crap my flautas!”  I love flautas too much to put them to waste.  So I ate burnt flautas for dinner.  After the third one I got smart and picked off some of the super burned parts.  It really wasn’t too bad smothered in salsa and guacamole.

Do you know what else I did yesterday? As I was putting a sleeping Emmet into my Ergo whilst parked in a compact spot (I drive a small SUV) and trying not to squish him into the door or bang the car next to us with the door, I let the door shut.  And I had already locked the car. It wasn’t a strong shut, it was just barely enough so the lock clicked.  This is what I get for parking in the compact spot but seriously, there were no other spots.  $40 and 30 minutes later we were back in the car.  Did I mention it was sprinkling?

how to celebrate december birthdays

We celebrated a birthday on Christmas Eve.  A big O-N-E!

I got crafty and made a bunting. My plan is to reuse it every year on his birthday.

Emmet had two celebrations.  The first a week prior to his actual birthday with a few of our close friends.  Then another on the actual day with family. He wore a fun tie at his ‘friends’ party.

There are a few things I think should be done to celebrate a December birthday to help differentiate it from the hustle and bustle of the holidays:
  1. Fill child’s room with balloons before they wake up in the morning.
  2. Don’t be stingy with the birthday decorations.  They need to overpower the holiday decorations.
  3. Don’t give just one gift for both events.  I believe two smaller gifts are better than just one in this case.
  4. Wrap all birthday gifts in birthday wrapping paper.
  5. Wait to decorate your tree until after the birthday celebration.
  6. Do not forget to take photos/videotape the birthday party and try not to have the tree in the background.
  7. Have a ‘friends’ party earlier in the month. You can have your friends when baby is little and then baby’s friends a couple years later. Like when they actually have friends and play with them instead of just near them.
  8. Have a birthday playlist and do not play any xmas music on this day unless requested by the birthday child.
Here are some fun birthday songs to include in your playlist:
  • The Beatles – Birthday
  • Stevie Wonder – Happy Birthday
  • Steppenwolf – Happy Birthday
  • The Ting Tings – Happy Birthday
  • Kermit Ruffins – Happy Birthday
No first birthday is complete without the first yummy bite of cake.  I made an organic white cake and homemade white buttercream frosting.  I kicked myself after I put the sprinkles on and realized that they were full of nasty dyes.  Next time I will come up with a better topping.

Anything else I should add to my list for next year?

something amazing happened today

This afternoon in the kitchen something amazing happened.  I was not expecting it.  Not today, not for awhile really.  Emmet was playing on the floor. He has access to a couple of low cupboards and likes to pull out all the plasticware and a box of Ziploc bags .  He likes to pull out each bag one by one.  I was slinging some grub into the crock pot for dinner.  When I finished, I walked over to where he was standing at his cupboard and reached my arms out and said something along the lines of ‘let’s go play some more.’  He took two steps to me. TWO!  Two unassisted steps. I figured he would squat down and crawl to me or I would reach out further to pick him up.  Only there wasn’t time for either of those thing to happen.  My boy walked today and I was there to see it.  Fucking awesome!  This is why I quit my job people.  This is *it.*

Now I have to go put all those Ziploc bags back in the box for tomorrow.

it’s a new year

On New Years Eve it was a whopping 75 degrees here and we spent a ton of time outside.  We played with rocks, raked the leaves for the fourth time this winter, hula hooped and drew with sidewalk chalk.  I would like to take a moment to let you know that I have NEVER been able to hula hoop. I have tried many a time and just did not have the moves.  On NYE I got my groove!  I hula hooped!  My friend Ginger will be so proud when she reads this.  She is a hula hoop master.  Needless to say, there will be much more hula hooping happening around here.  This was my genie pose while hooping.

There was no babysitter and no fancy night out.  The most important thing to us was at home so that is where we happily stayed.  I may have even fallen asleep when I put E to bed at 8pm…  We began the first day of this new year with some mimosas to account for the lack of hoo-rah last night.

I am not big on new year resolutions.  I think it’s silly to make them because it’s a new year.  I don’t think they tend to last long when done in this fashion.  I like to make them all year long and I make more progress this way.  All that being said I did take stock of what has been bumping around in my head and made you a nice sidewalk chalk list.

And I can’t leave you without an Emmet shot. So here.

How did you ring in the new year?

I’m alive!

Hey ya’ll.  I am still alive.  I needed to use my free time on non-blogging activities such as birthday/holiday preparations and spending extra QT with Emmers.  Sometimes he needs me close more often and I choose to stay close and give him my full attention during those times.  I have not taken a break from taking photos of our adventures so hopefully over the next week or two I can fill you in on what we’ve been up to.  I made the switch to shooting RAW and need to figure out Lightroom so I can produce jpegs to put on this here blog.  I am going to get my learn on folks. Word up.

totally rad stockings

As you know by now, we have a new family member and hence we need a new stocking.  I don’t want anybody else many others to have my same stockings and I want to support a small business so I went straight to Etsy.  There I found a plethora of fun choices.  My favorite was by LaFortune’s Linens.  They are not exactly ‘Christmas-y’ stockings which is not something you usually see and I like that about them.  They are crazy fresh.  I liked them so much that we all got new stockings.  There are tons of fun fabrics to choose from.

For the record, Dylan picked the houndstooth himself.  He’s so fly.  I can’t wait to stuff ’em on the 24th. Woot!

Did you get any new fun xmas gear this year?

*Nobody paid me and in no way was I compensated for writing about this product.  I just loved it and wanted to share!

These lights are in my ‘hood.  They rock.  I should write a post about the pride of Texans.  It is something to stand in awe of.
